Battle Buddies serve as an affinity group to create a safe space for people who may not feel heard, seen or understood in the larger community because they are in the numerical minority.
Less than 2% of educators in the US are Black males.
Understanding Belonging
The need to belong in a community is as basic to our human existence as our need for food or water. The benefits from interactions with people who share common identities or experiences expand to increasing health, happiness and engagement levels across the board. However, when in the numerical minority of a community, these bonding interactions may not occur frequently enough to feel a true sense of belonging.
While we continue to have racial imbalances across our country, many government and nonprofit entities have looked for root causes, such as education, to understand the foundations in which our systems have been built.
During our affinity group meetings, we share freely and without inhibition about our experiences. We feel more visible and more included in our community, in doing so, enhance our commitment to inclusivity.
Come One, Come All
Even though our purpose is to support and uplift Black male leaders, we welcome all races, ethnicities and gender as advocates for this mission. This organization is not meant to be exclusive, but rather to provide support to a professional field that has less than 2% of minority males in school leadership. Furthermore, will not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, religion, color, disability, genetic information, sex, age, national origin, immigrant status, English-speaking status, or marital status.
